1. The 1975 Restoration of Kentucky Girls’ Basketball
From 1932 to 1974, Kentucky high school girls were locked out of official state championship competition. When federal Title IX regulations and grassroots pressure forced the KHSAA to reinstate the Girls’ Sweet 16 in 1975, Louisville instantly asserted its dominance.
Louisville Butler High School captured the inaugural resurrected tournament in 1975. The very next year, in 1976, Sacred Heart Academy won its first state championship under coach Bunny Daugherty, led by a gritty freshman starter named Donna Bender.
2. Donna Bender Moir: Kentucky’s Hardwood Matriarch
After starring at the University of Cincinnati, Donna Bender Moir returned to Sacred Heart in 1991 as head coach. Over the next three decades, Moir amassed over 850 career coaching victories, constructing two distinct three-peat eras:
- The First Three-Peat (2002, 2003, 2004): Dominated the state with disciplined motion offense and relentless full-court defense.
- The Historic Four-Peat (2021, 2022, 2023, 2024): Propelled by three-time Gatorade Kentucky Player of the Year ZaKiyah Johnson, Sacred Heart achieved what no team in modern KHSAA history had ever accomplished: winning four consecutive state titles.
Donna Moir stands alone in KHSAA history: the only person to win a state basketball championship as both a player and a seven-time head coach.
3. Louisville’s Girls’ Basketball Legacy
Jefferson County has produced 15 KHSAA Girls’ Sweet 16 titles:
- Sacred Heart Academy: 8 titles (1976, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024)
- Louisville Butler: 5 titles (1975, 1980, 2008, 2014, 2016)
- Louisville Mercy: 2 titles (1992, 2010)
- Louisville Southern: 1 title (1988)
- Louisville Iroquois: 1 title (2009)
- DuPont Manual: 1 title (2012)
