AI Mode Is Changing Search Behavior: What Longer, Multimodal Queries Mean for SEO

Google's May 2026 AI Mode data shows that search behavior is changing in measurable ways. Google reported that AI Mode has surpassed one billion monthly active users globally, that AI Mode queries have more than doubled every quarter since launch, and that the average AI Mode query is triple the length of a traditional Search query.

That matters because longer queries reveal more context. People are not only typing category labels like "SEO agency" or "roof repair." They are asking for help with decisions: who to choose, what to compare, what tradeoffs matter, what to do next, and how to solve a specific problem in a specific situation.

Search is becoming more conversational

In traditional SEO, many strategies were organized around short keyword clusters. That still has value, but AI Mode encourages users to describe intent in full. A query might include the buyer's goal, budget, location, constraints, preferences, timeline, and past attempts.

This changes content planning. A page that targets only the head term may not be specific enough for AI-assisted discovery. Strong pages need to cover the surrounding decision context.

Search is becoming more multimodal

Google also noted that more than one in six U.S. searches now use voice or images, and that image searches are growing quickly. This means AI search strategy cannot be limited to text. Images, screenshots, product visuals, service-area photos, diagrams, charts, videos, and file-based content all become part of the discovery surface.

For local businesses, this means photos should be descriptive, current, and tied to real services. For B2B teams, it means diagrams, process visuals, comparison tables, and report-style assets can help explain complex offerings.

Search is becoming more decision-oriented

Google's AI Mode insights also point to growth in planning and brainstorming queries. That is a strategic gift. It tells brands that the most valuable content is not only definitional. It helps users evaluate options and move from uncertainty to action.

How to adapt your content strategy

1. Write for complete questions. Build pages around buyer questions, not only keyword labels.
2. Add decision support. Include comparisons, use cases, fit criteria, pricing factors, implementation steps, and common mistakes.
3. Use clear section architecture. Descriptive H2s and H3s help humans scan and help AI systems extract relevant passages.
4. Upgrade media assets. Use original images, charts, annotated screenshots, and diagrams with useful surrounding text.
5. Connect content to conversion. Every page should make the next step clear: call, book, request, download, compare, or read more.

The takeaway

AI Mode is expanding what people consider searchable. If your content only answers short, generic queries, it will miss the richer intent now showing up in AI search. The future belongs to content that can handle nuance: context, constraints, examples, evidence, and action.
