The Brown Hotel is Louisville's crowning jewel of historic hospitality, welcoming presidents, royalty, and Derby champions since 1923. Built by Kentucky entrepreneur J. Graham Brown, this 16-story Georgian Revival landmark on 4th and Broadway is a proud member of the Historic Hotels of America.
1. The 1926 Origin of the Hot Brown
In 1926, Chef Fred K. Schmidt created the Hot Brown inside the hotel's kitchens as a midnight supper for over 1,200 energetic guests attending the hotel's famous evening dinner dances. Today, over 20,000 Hot Browns are served annually in the hotel's J. Graham's Café and the clubby Lobby Bar.
2. The Breathtaking Lobby & Hand-Painted Ceilings
The two-story grand lobby is an architectural tour de force, featuring hand-carved stone fireplaces, ornate crystal chandeliers, Botticino marble flooring, and hand-painted coffered ceilings depicting English floral and heraldic motifs.
3. The Historic Lobby Bar & Urban Bourbon Trail
As a charter member of the Urban Bourbon Trail, the Lobby Bar stocks over 150 Kentucky bourbons, including rare private-barrel selections and the signature Old Forester 1920 Prohibition Style Old Fashioned.
4. The English Grill Fine Dining
Adorned with dark English oak paneling, leaded glass windows, and equestrian oil paintings, The English Grill delivers AAA Four-Diamond dining highlighted by rack of Kentucky lamb, sea bass, and decadent bourbon bread pudding.
