1. The 19-Mile Funeral Procession Through Derby City

Before Muhammad Ali was laid to rest, his funeral cortege traced the geography of his entire life across Louisville:

  • Beginning along Muhammad Ali Boulevard in downtown Louisville.
  • Passing his childhood home at 3302 Grand Avenue, where thousands tossed red roses onto the hearse.
  • Pausing before his high school alma mater, Central High School on Chestnut Street.
  • Rolling past Columbia Auditorium (Spalding University), where he met Officer Joe Martin.
  • Arriving at the KFC Yum! Center for a globally televised interfaith memorial attended by world heads of state, civil rights champions, and thousands of Louisville neighbors.

2. Sacred Design: Islamic Orientation & The Headstone Inscription

Ali’s memorial site was designed in consultation with Islamic scholars to honor his Muslim faith while welcoming visitors of all backgrounds. His grave is aligned toward Mecca (the Qibla).

The polished black granite headstone features only his name in simple raised block letters, along with his defining moral motto:

“Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.”

Two curved black granite benches flank the memorial, inviting visitors to sit in quiet contemplation beneath 150-year-old native Kentucky oaks and sweetgum trees.

The Central Kentucky Abolitionist Connection

While Louisville was Ali’s hometown and lifelong sanctuary, his birth name and fierce fighting spirit trace directly to Central Kentucky. Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. was named after his father, who was named in tribute to the radical 19th-century abolitionist General Cassius Marcellus Clay of Whitehall and Lexington—who defended his anti-slavery newspaper The True American with brass cannons against pro-slavery mobs.
